Flower Power

The Singapore Botanical Garden is not the type of thing I normally get excited about. But after several people told me it was worthwhile and reading several recommendations online , it was my first destination last weekend.

I am, relatively speaking, a fan of public parks and open green spaces. I appreciate nature and enjoy the tranquility and magical design of our world. I am also a big fan of Central Park in New York, which I especially love because of its juxtaposition within one of the worlds most urban centers. Therefore, I appreciated Singapore Botanical Garden's suburban location and lack of entry fee.
Unlike central park where signs lead to 'the Great Lawn' or 'Strawberry Fields' or 'Walman Rink', signs here where titled 'rain forest', 'Orchard Garden', Ginger Garden'. Of all the exotic choices, my first choice was "Orchid", the largest collection of orchids in the world.

I could try to put into words how fascinatingting, exotic and magnificent the garden was, but seeing as I am not much of a writer, these images are a better representation. The complete set can be seen here.

I will also add that the heat and humidity of Singapore can be stifling. I was convinced that in spite of the heat, the people managing the orchid garden somehow dialed up the humidity even more. A fact you might notice when you see water perspiring on several flowers. Needless to say, the day required a stop back to the hotel for a shower and change of clothes.

3 Min in Bali

Before coming to Shanghai I stopped over in Bali for some meetings. We stayed at this great hotel. The weather was wonderful but unfortinately I spent the majority of my time in conference rooms.
Dinners where fun and I met some wonderful folks, however these pictures represent the bulk of my time in the sun. I did however make a point to swim in the Pacific. It was salty and very similar to the Atlantic.

Where Are You Now (advertising)

1979. It was a good year. And while perusing a booklet called 'Remember When', I ran across an amazing advertisement. Amazing because;
1) Its for SPAM - I didn't even know they advertised
2) The sexual innuendo is so over the top, yet remains somehow..... acceptable???

First off - what a headline!

And why can't they write copy like this anymore; (regarding their T-Shirt) "If you've got an eye for design, and you don't mind a few eyes on your design, send us your name, address, size and a check...."

Whats on heavy rotation - Richard Hawley

A British crooner, I first heard Richard Hawley when I saw Banksy's 'Exit Through the Gift Shop' - his song 'Tonight the Streets are Ours' - see previous post. I think he's somewhere between Orbison or Elvis but modern.. Either way - I'm diggin' it... Here some recent video's.

A great commentary about how art tries to brainwash us into believing the hype. Nice job bringing us back down to earth Banksy.... Funny, honest and interesting. A great art film, even if you hate Graffiti.

Stormtroopers on vacation

A very fun collection of Photo's from Stefan(?) - I guess he's French??? Anyway - really fun, especially if you're into star wars... kind of surreal - some are better than others. But overall, a nice trip through the imagination of a stormtroopers. see all of them here....

Awesome article from the NYTimes where they spotlight some great Polaroid's from the around the globe.

We love the Polaroid and can't wait till new film becomes available again. There's just something to that soft, grainy color that reminds me of simpler times.... And the magic of watching the image miraculously appear!

I have joined the heard

and purchased an iphone. I must admit, despite some minor kinks - it really is a super phone.

After spending the last year (or two) in denial, it rocks. It works better, is designed better and looks better than everything else on the market.

Still a little pricey, but you have to splurge once in a while.
