3 Min in Bali

Before coming to Shanghai I stopped over in Bali for some meetings. We stayed at this great hotel. The weather was wonderful but unfortinately I spent the majority of my time in conference rooms.
Dinners where fun and I met some wonderful folks, however these pictures represent the bulk of my time in the sun. I did however make a point to swim in the Pacific. It was salty and very similar to the Atlantic.

Eastern Days

I recently moved to Shanghai for work on a temporary basis. I'll be here through the end of the year. In the spirit of sharing, which is the purpose of this blog, I thought i'd shift gears from random cultural internet items of note, and focus my attention on random and interesting Chinese items of note....

So... My first observation.... The below images represent one aspect of Shanghai and China... Over the next few months I hope to show you others....

20 Years of Ninja Tune

Ninja Tune. Perhaps the label behind more CD's in my college collection than any other. Earth Rise remains to this day, on heavy rotation. From flavorwire, here are some video's a quick overview of the 20th anniversary box set.

"Including six CDs, six 7-inches, two posters, and a hardcover edition of the retrospective book Ninja Tune: 20 Years Of Beats & Pieces, the Ninja Tune XX box is a collector’s dream. The set features new tracks and remixes from Roots Manuva, Amon Tobin, Diplo, Gold Panda, Kid Koala, Mr. Scruff, the Orb, and a host of others, alongside classic tracks from throughout the label’s history."

"Stream the first compilation in full, visit the Ninja Tune XX website, watch the top 10 Ninja Tune videos of all time, read an excerpt from 20 Years of Beats & Pieces, download the official iPhone app, get the details on Ninja Tune XX events around the world, and buy the box set or the standalone compilations and book."

Midlife For Gen X

Gen X. Are we really the generation of "smoke weed, argue about Theory, sleep with one another’s girlfriends and boyfriends and wonder what was going to happen next"?

In a recent NYTimes OpEd, thats exactly how several new film makers describe us.... Disappointing. Maybe. Accurate - my wife and family think so...

So what does that mean for us - are we really the generations of do nothings? Is that why Gen Y or whomever has followed us are so over-ambitious?

I look around my office and one observation not noted in the article is that we may be the last generation to understand work - the fact that it takes time, perseverance, critical thinking and does not always require a computer... We maybe do nothings, but at least we know how to do something.

Whats on heavy rotation - Richard Hawley

A British crooner, I first heard Richard Hawley when I saw Banksy's 'Exit Through the Gift Shop' - his song 'Tonight the Streets are Ours' - see previous post. I think he's somewhere between Orbison or Elvis but modern.. Either way - I'm diggin' it... Here some recent video's.

The Huf Haus (can modular building be cool?)

A Green house, well designed, under $500K..... Now available in the US! From inhabit.com....

From Bauhaus to HUF HAUS: Energy Efficient Prefab Homes

by Cameron Scott, 04/09/10

green design, modular homes, pre-fab homes, huf haus, sustainable design, sustainable architecture, green home, prefabricated architecture, prefab housing, factory-built home

German company HUF HAUS is offering gorgeous green houses to the masses by bringing Bauhaus style to factory-made green homes. The company’s signature post-and-beam construction allows for big open spaces, and they serve them up with solar panels and even an optional geothermal heating system.

Huf Haus, modular homes, pre-fab homes, sustainable design, sustainable architecture

Tripe-glazed glass walls open the houses onto the landscape while also providing maximum insulation. Sure, there’s a healthy dose of (responsibly forested) wood involved along with the more conventional concrete, but here’s something nifty: HUF HAUS’s factory uses its wood offcuts to generate some of the electricity it uses.

HUF HAUS has just opened an office in the United States — based in Cleveland, but serving the whole country — and the company insists that its houses are only pre-fab in the strictest sense of the word: the modular system is designed to be versatile, and, as you can see, every house is different.

166 Million???

Apparently this is the most viewed video ever on YouTube... Not sure how I missed this... I watched it - kinda funny. Watched it again, funnier. I think there's something a little surreal and it definitely doesn't hurt that the kid has a British accent.

"Shit (his) Dad Says" - hilarious and true

here's the story: the son's name is Justin. "I'm 29. I live with my 74-year-old dad. He is awesome. I just write down shit that he says." Some highlights:

""Don't mess with him...Trust me, you don't fuck with a man that sleeps next to a woman he never screws. They're unpredictable."

"Fine, let’s take a vote. Who wants fish for dinner?...Yeah, democracy ain’t so fun when it fucks you, huh?”

"No, I'm not a pessimist. At some point the world shits on everybody. Pretending it ain't shit makes you an idiot, not an optimist."

“Yes I got him a gift. He had a kidney stone. You piss a rock through your pecker, you deserve more than just a pat on the fucking back."

“We’re banned from the dog park. Well, I guess it’s okay to hump, and it’s okay to bark, but both at the same time freaks people out."

NYC Nutworks....

A very funny new blog that tracks wireless networks around the city. It confirms both the creativity of New Yorkers as well as some their more deviant fetish's... In addition, there are some nice snarky comments that help bring a smile to your face... Enjoy!
